ArtSpeak: Then and Now: The National Art School and its Links to Adelaide
Event description
Join us for our final ArtSpeak for 2023 with Deborah Beck OAM, lecturer, archivist and collections manager at the National Art School in Sydney.
NAS collections manager Deborah Beck will discuss some of the works in the collection, and describe the close ties between many NAS artists and teachers with Adelaide, its gallery and art schools.
One major artist who worked in both Sydney and Adelaide was Rayner Hoff, an English sculptor who arrived in Australia to teach at NAS in 1923. The National Art School Collection holds a large repository of works by Hoff and his students. As well as revealing rare photographs of Hoff’s life and work, Deborah Beck will discuss his establishment of the first school of sculpture in Australia, and his influential work on two major commissions in Adelaide.
