“Greenland: Queen Mary or President Trump – what the media got wrong about politics”
In July 2024, Denmark’s Queen Mary and King Frederik visited Greenland - their first trip around their kingdom since King Frederik’s mother’s abdication.
Exactly 6 months later, Donald Trump Junior landed in Greenland’s capital Nuuk, promoting Donald J. Trump’s plans to buy the world’s largest island. Suddenly, Denmark’s ‘Borgen’ found itself in perhaps its worst international crisis since World War II – our closest ally USA suddenly shifting from dear brother to bullying villain. Locally in Greenland an already unstable political situation exploded, with elections now called for mid-March. The politicians were unprepared. The news media also failed, and still are.
This seminar will discuss why a critical media coverage of foreign politics is so difficult. A/Prof Jørgensen will look into the systemic barriers between parliament, newsrooms and the people.
