Asian Cinema Collective presents: Mississippi Masala (1991)

Mira Nair’s Mississippi Masala starring Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury is a tender, yet astute exploration of the complexities of identity, displacement and interracial love in the American South.

Released in 1991, Mississippi Masala was groundbreaking at the time for centering an interracial relationship between an Indian woman and a Black man - something rarely depicted in mainstream cinema at the time, or nearly 35 years later.

The film follows the story of an Indian family who had spent four generations in Uganda before being exiled to the United States. Relocating to Mississippi, Mina (Sarita Choudhury) falls in love with Demetrius (Denzel Washington), a Black American carpet cleaner, and their love story unfolds against a backdrop of intergenerational trauma, community tension and cultural expectations.

With stunning and vibrant cinematography, sharp social insight into the nuance of diaspora and otherness, and charismatic performances by Sarita Choudhury and Denzel Washington, Mississippi Masala is iconic and not to be missed.
