Traditional assessment methods often overlook the diverse ways students learn and demonstrate their learning. By applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), instructors can design assessments that are more inclusive, flexible, and aligned with diverse learner needs. UDL-informed assessment practices support deeper learning and motivation and foster learner agency; key drivers of self-efficacy and the development of a growth mindset.

This workshop invites instructors to reimagine assessment design through integrating Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Participants will explore how UDL principles – providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action & expression – can be applied to create assessments that empower all learners. Participants will leave with practical strategies and tools to design, implement, and evaluate assessments that support learner variability, promote self-regulation, and enhance student agency. Whether you are new to UDL or looking to deepen your understanding and practice, this session will help equip you to assess learner success.

Through engaging in the activities and content of this workshop, you have the opportunity to

Identify core principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as they relate to assessment design
Analyze common assessment practices to determine potential barriers to learner engagement and success
Apply UDL principles and guidelines to create or revise an assessment that support learner variability
Design an evaluative tool to objectively and effectively assess a newly created or revised assessment
