Event description

Brighton Alive together with Brighton Council invite you to:

Learn the power of connecting people to community

Brighton Alive invites you to a 2 day workshop co-designed with community, in collaboration with the Jeder Institute.

Through this workshop participants will learn, discuss and practice community centred approaches, discover strengths, skills and ideas that create inclusive, thriving and welcoming communities.

More than ever we recognise the importance of connecting people to community. Seeing them as a part of a community is vital for having a voice and to create a sense of belonging.

ABCD is a powerful approach to community engagement and development that focuses on abilities and potential, rather than problems and deficits by discovering the resources that are already present in a community.

By building relationships and creating the space for opportunities to emerge, community members become powerful and are more in control of their own decision making. The key principles will demonstrate how ABCD ensures an inclusive community process and participants will leave the workshop with practical tools to assist communities to help themselves and others discover and mobilise community strengths.

“Every single person has skills, abilities and gifts”. John McKnight

Drawing on the experience of both the participants and facilitator team, participants will leave our workshops with practical tools, skills and ideas on how to:

  • Build on What's Strong not What's Wrong.
  • Discussing the principles and philosophy of ABCD
  • Discover practical strategies to identify skills of individuals and mobilise community assets
  • Build and maintain effective partnerships
  • Mapping for action
  • Discovering Care & Learning Conversation
  • Building ABCD community partnerships

Your Host:

Fiona Miller - Fiona is a creative conduit with a diverse back ground that includes community development, creative & visual arts, early years, education, bushfire recovery, local government, inclusion, community houses, community gardens and more. Having worked within a variety of organisations/agencies  she has a broad understanding of the diversity of organisational structures.

Creativity, Curiosity, Conversations and a little bit of Chaos are great ways to discover what people care enough about in their communities to lead to action. What we need to remember is slowing down to bring everyone on the journey and relationships are key.

As a facilitator, graphic harvester or community member, contributing to community for making great places and participating in community led projects that are sustainable are her focus. She loves nothing more than watching people and projects grow and uses creative arts, ABCD and strengths based practices as platforms for discovering and exploring community futures.
Supporting our young people to explore their own place within community is something she sees as particularly important. Everyone deserves to feel safe and be included and we can build relationships and have fun while we do it.
