Sarah St James, or Sadie- depending who you ask- is a spoken word poet and outspoken Trans Woman. Born and raised in so-called Brisbane, she grew up performing amateur theatre at Brisbane Arts Theatre. She has been performing her poetry since 2014 at slams and open mics, along with a one man show in her second year of University: “Last Drinks Before Dawn” exploring themes of gender, sexuality and vulnerability. Having moved to Naarm in 2018, she experienced the entirety of the Covid lockdowns off the back of a breakup and in the midst of an Autism and ADHD diagnosis, among others.

She has been published in the anthology “In-Flux, trans and gender diverse reflections and imaginings.”

Her first solo publishing venture was the hand bound anthology “The Brown Paper Diaries” soon to be available in print.

7:00 pm for a 7:30 pm start, sign up will be available on the night.

5 minute limit.

Perform your poetry, creative writing or performance art on the open mic to a friendly audience or come and be part of the crowd. There are going to be themes, writing prompts and improvised creativity (2 lines to a theme to music). Completely free. For more information check the Facebook events closer to the date. Hosted by Loran Steinberg (they/them) Music by George O'Hara (he/they).

To keep this event a safe space for everyone, there will be no hate speech or your mic will be turned off and you may be asked to leave the stage.

Mamma Chen's is a wheelchair accessible venue however, the stage is not; we are happy to pass you the mic if needed.

Mamma Chen’s acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and the Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation, the true owners of the land that we live and operate on. We would like to pay our respects to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
