Creating an authentic student learning experience in the online clinic setting

ATMS invites all natural medicine educators to this online Education Forum

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a sharp change in the way we deliver training. Education providers had to rapidly transition their teaching and assessment programs to online. Students appreciated the effort involved in making the transition to online learning as engaging as possible. But it raised many challenges. Some things simply cannot be taught online. A particular challenge during lockdowns has been how to manage the development of clinical skills in the online learning environment.

We invite you to share what worked and what didn’t work, when trying to achieve effective student learning of clinical skills. The focus will be a discussion about the strategies and solutions that our professional community has employed. By drawing on the collective wisdom of our community we can enable effective student engagement for learning and make our profession stronger.

Speakers

Peter Berryman – President of ATMS, is qualified as a Homeopath, Naturopath, Educator and Health Scientist. Peter has been in continuous private practice as a natural medicine practitioner since 1986, and has been involved in Natural Medicine education and clinical training since 1990. Peter has been ATMS President since 2017 and sits on numerous ATMS Committees.

Professor Sandra Grace – ATMS Director, is a leader in natural medicine education, practice and research. She is the Deputy Chair of Academic Board (Teaching and Learning), and Chair of the Accreditation Committee, Southern Cross University. Her leadership roles in ATMS include Chair of the Academic Review Committee, Editor of JATMS, and a long-standing member of the Research Committee. Sandra is renowned for improving the quality of natural medicine education in Australia, and beyond.

Dr Airdre Grant – ARC member, is an author and academic with extensive experience in education. Her key focus has been education in complementary medicine - a focus of her doctoral thesis. She consults to the industry, such as the TEQSA Panel of Experts which looks at accreditation and industry standards.

Patricia Cooper – is a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist, Teacher/Educator and Exercise Scientist. Her role as Head Teacher at Randwick College, TAFE NSW, includes the responsibility for the delivery of Massage, Fitness and Sport & Recreation qualifications. She has over 30 years experience in the allied health and fitness industries, including 25 years in vocational education and training. Patricia is passionate about ensuring all her students have access to high quality educational learning experiences and opportunities.

Catherine Smith – is Program Director for the Bachelor of Health Science - Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine (WHM) programs at Torrens University Australia. Catherine holds qualifications in Naturopathy, Health Science, and post graduate qualifications in Nutrition, Complementary Medicine and Education. Catherine has worked in education and academic management for over 10 years and has been a naturopath for over 20 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic the Naturopathic and WHM academic team rapidly implemented a telehealth service as a reasonable adjustment to in-person student-led clinical practicum, at The Practice Wellbeing Centres.

Graeme De Goldi – is the Founder and Director of the Melbourne Institute of Massage & Myotherapy. A Victorian based training organisation, the Institute has been operating for 23 years. Graeme is currently on the Project Steering Committee for the reaccreditation of the Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy and is Chair of the Massage & Myotherapy Network of Victoria - a group of both public and private training organisations. Formerly, he has had extensive experience in massage education committees and was the Chair for the accreditation of the Certificate and the Diploma in Bowen Therapy.
