Founded in 2012 by tenor and baritone saxophonist Daniel Casares and Hammond B-3 organist Max Cowan, Atta Kid has carved out a distinctive sound that bridges the precise chaos of East Bay Funk with the contagious lilt of New Orleans soul. This Oakland-based powerhouse brings together two of the Bay Area's most accomplished musicians—Casares, who has performed with soul legend Irma Thomas and drumming icon Bernard Purdie, and Cowan, who has shared stages with New Orleans funk pioneer Zigaboo Modeliste and blues great Jimmy McCracklin.
The band's debut album "East Basics" showcases their ability to write smart originals that toe the line between contemplation and booty-shakin', with compositions that shift effortlessly from funky street beats to fast boogaloo funk, with plenty of odd-time transitions and left-field detours. All tracks are penned by the co-leaders themselves, demonstrating a sophisticated compositional approach that keeps audiences engaged intellectually while their feet can't help but move. Atta Kid's live shows feature an all-star lineup including Bay Area trumpet great Mike Olmos, who has toured with Etta James.
In February 2017, Atta Kid made a deep impression at the prestigious SFJAZZ Center with two sold-out performances of Lee Morgan's iconic 1964 Blue Note album "The Sidewinder," proving their ability to honor jazz tradition while maintaining their signature groove-centric approach. Whether delivering their original material or reimagining classics, Atta Kid has earned their reputation as one of the Bay Area's most lethal funk hit-squads—serving up what they call "music for the brain and the booty."
