We Belong - Women Pioneering The Future in Construction

Just like our suffrage sisters 131 years ago, many women in construction have been pioneers in the industry, advocating for change and carving a path for others to follow, by encouraging and mentoring women starting out as a student or apprentice, supporting those considering a career in the sector, and cheering on the ones who are leading the way.

Join us, as you are, straight from work, at this event which is about bringing everyone together from across the sector, from the office to the site and everywhere in between, to hear from apprentice leaders from BCITO, and other pioneers in the industry, and to continue to build towards the collective mission of a construction sector that is attractive, exciting and inclusive to work in.

NAWIC has joined forces with BCITO to bring this event to life at every NAWIC chapter across NZ.

Come along to this years Suffrage themed We Belong event to:

Hear from a BCITO apprentice leader, Kiri Cooper, about her journey so far and why they chose construction
Connect with other women in construction and hear various stories
Be encouraged and inspired about your own career path in construction
Be inspired to continue to be or be part of the change for future generations.

We will hear from “pink safety boots” supplier - Steel Blue who will present a quick talk on podiatry and the importance of wearing the correctly designed boots.

Other panelists who will join our apprentice leader will bring a full circle view to careers in construction.

A bit about Suffrage:

In the General Election held on 28 November 1893, New Zealand women were able to cast their votes for the first time ever! That right didn’t come easily or without a fight but thanks to the women in the suffrage movement, New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the vote in 1893. It was a trailblazing victory that would inspire other suffrage campaigns around the world.

Each year on 19 September in New Zealand, we mark Suffrage Day to celebrate and commemorate this milestone, its important legacy, and acknowledge the contributions of the suffragists who fought for this right and the betterment of our society.

This year marks 131 years of Women being able to vote in New Zealand.
