Event description

Join us for a free audio description workshop with Judith Jones, designed especially for anyone working in the GLAM sector in Waitaha Canterbury. Staff, students and volunteers welcome! Audio descriptions are an excellent way to make collections more accessible for diverse audiences, particularly for members of the blind and low vision community.

In this workshop we’ll explore the art of audio description in action. We welcome both new and refreshing describers. This collaborative and practical workshop will support you with audio description knowledge and skills you can use in your gallery and museum workplaces. This will be a words-on experience. We’ll learn and apply the key elements of audio description. We’ll listen to, discuss, draft, and share audio descriptions. We’ll learn how the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities uses audio description to offer a new way for people to experience the artefacts. Together, we’ll dig deeper into how this work can support meaningful experiences for our gallery and museum visitors.

Judith Jones is a Visitor Services host and tour guide at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. She’s been an audio describer for ten years, describing a wide range of gallery and museum objects, and live and recorded performances like dance, theatre, and events.  She was awarded the 2020 Arts Access Accolade by Arts Access Aotearoa for her advocacy and work in the world of art accessibility.

Based at the UC Teece Museum, in the historic Christchurch Arts Centre, the workshop will also provide opportunities to network with colleagues in the sector, and enjoy exploring the delights of the Arts Centre!
