August McEachern: Be My Friend
Description
August McEachern wants to be your friend. In their one-hour Fringe preview, they’ll pitch, plead, and perform every reason why they’re fit for the job — even when they don’t act like it.
August made a best friend, quite literally. The New York comedian is joined on stage by an impossible-to-ignore co-star: a 6-foot tall stuffed Best Friend, hand-stitched to fulfill every need of a palatable platonic bond. At its zany core a stand-up show, Be My Friend unwinds its way into the absurd and sentimental. Through thick and thin, August’s Best Friend remains by their side. A joke, a prop, and something more symbolic: an embodiment of the desire to be seen, even if it must be manufactured.
Directed by Sarah Weitzmann, whose work spans late-night television and the New York Comedy Festival, and produced by Shelby Smith, the show reads as theatre, shaped by the joys and drama of companionship. You’ll laugh, you might cry, and you’ll definitely leave with one more friend in your pocket.
