The Manicurist's Daughter | Asian Mental Health Bookclub
Event description
We created the Asian Mental Health Bookclub as an opportunity to explore Asian American identity and mental health themes in community.
We will have a virtual meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. For each book, there will be 2 meetings: the first meeting will entail a group discussion of the book, and the second meeting will consist of a conversation with the author of the book.
2024 Line-Up:
- (8/13)Â The Manicurist's Daughter: Book Discussion
- (9/10)Â The Manicurist's Daughter: Author Conversation with Susan Lieu
- (10/8)Â Fixing Broken Mirrors: Book Discussion
- (11/12)Â Fixing Broken Mirrors: Author Conversation with Taesung
Join us for a virtual event where we will be discussing The Manicurist's Daughter. This book is "an emotionally raw memoir about the crumbling of the American Dream and a daughter of refugees who searches for answers after her mother dies during plastic surgery." Lieu's book has received several accolades, including from Elle Magazine, The LA Times, and The Washington Post. We chose this book because it powerfully displays many of the themes we often see with our clients: emotional suppression in Asian American families, family roles, migration experiences, and harmful beauty standards. The event will take place on Tue Aug 13 2024 at 5pm PST. Don't miss out on this opportunity to connect with other Asians/Asian Americans through the power of stories!
EVENT FAQ:

- This group is open to all those who identify as Asian & Asian American, ages 18+.
What type of book club vibes can I expect?
- This book club will be more of a casual conversation about the book and how it can connect to our lives, rather than an in-depth literary discussion (though you're welcome to share your literary insights).

- Absolutely, but we do encourage you to read the book in its entirety for a richer conversation.
