Auslan 2 Classes - Semester 2 2025
Event description
The UQU Disability Collective is working with Deaf Connect to bring you an 8-week opportunity to learn Auslan and basic skills to communicate with Deaf people in Auslan on a range of topics happening on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the semester! Auslan is an important skill for communicating more effectively with d/Deaf and HoH students, family members, and the broader community.
UQU are happy to offer subsidised classes of $80 per person (usually valued at over $195).
Deaf Connect’s Auslan 2 class is a continuation of Auslan 1, and it builds on the foundational skills already learned. It’s designed to further develop your understanding and ability to use Australian Sign Language (Auslan) in everyday conversations.
The skills that you will learn include:
Time (days, weeks, months)
Daily activities and routines
Family and relationships
Food and shopping
Hobbies and interests
More complex sentence structures
Asking and answering more detailed questions
Giving and understanding directions
Describing people, places, and routines
Use of classifiers (handshapes that represent objects/actions)
Proper use of Auslan grammar (which is different from English grammar)
Sentence types: yes/no questions, WH-questions, negation, affirmations
Please note: In order to receive your certification for completion of the course, you must attend six out of the eight of the classes that are provided throughout the duration of the course.
