Event description

The UQU Disability Collective is working with Deaf Connect to bring you an 8-week opportunity to learn Auslan and basic skills to communicate with Deaf people in Auslan on a range of topics happening on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the semester! Auslan is an important skill for communicating more effectively with d/Deaf and HoH students, family members, and the broader community.

UQU are happy to offer subsidised classes of $80 per person (usually valued at over $195).

This is an 8-week** introduction to Auslan course on the St Lucia campus, designed for people with no previous language skill or knowledge of Auslan. You will learn basic skills to communicate with Deaf people in Auslan on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language.

The skills that you will learn include:

  • Greet others and introduce yourself
  • Give and request personal details such as phone numbers and addresses
  • Count in Auslan
  • Fingerspell in Auslan
  • Ask and answer simple questions (using "who", "what", "when", "where", etc.)
  • Communicate practical vocabulary including colours, days of the week, and family
  • Express agreement and disagreement
  • Use visual-gestural communication strategies
  • Identify the Deaf Community
  • Explain effective ways of communicating with deaf people

Please note: In order to receive your certification for completion of the course, you must attend six out of the eight of the classes that are provided throughout the duration of the course.

**Select whether you would like to attend your 8 weeks of classes on Tuesday, Wednesday OR Thursday. The day of your first class will be the day you attend for the remainder of the course.

Join us weekly in the Kingham Room, UQU Complex, Level 2.
