Get ready for a bird-watching adventure with the Aussie Bird Count! Join us for a leisurely 20-minute evening bird count, where we'll observe the captivating world of our feathered friends in the Port River area.

The Aussie Bird Count is an activity for all-ages that involves observing and counting the birds that live near you – whether that’s in your garden, the local park, a beach or even your town centre. This helps to understand who lives in these areas and how we can support them. This year is special as it is the 10th anniversary of the Aussie Bird Count and we are absolutely thrilled to take part in it.

What to Expect:

20 minutes of birdwatching bliss
Meet at the Port Environment Centre first to hear more about the Aussie Bird Count and how you can get involved
Dress comfortably for a fun outdoor experience and a short wander along the Port River near the Port Environment Centre
Kids are welcome! (supervision required as we'll be beside the river)
We've got bird ID booklets to share, plus a handful of binoculars for you to get up close

What to Bring:

Please dress for the weather (i.e. sun protection / warm layers / raincoat)
Filled water bottle
Personal medications (e.g., inhalers)
Camera (optional)
Binoculars (if you have them)
A charged smartphone and downloaded BirdLife app (optional)

After this session, we encourage you to do more Bird Counts in areas you visit (or your own backyard). The 2023 Aussie Bird Count will be held from 16 - 22 October and you can do multiple 20 minute counts during these dates. Register here.

Please note: Participants under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult and appropriately supervised throughout the event.

Cancellation: We reserve the right to cancel if the weather forecast predicts unsafe conditions – we will notify you with as much notice as possible should this happen.

Attendee information may be used for follow up evaluation, in order to assess the longer term impacts of our events. Follow up contact may be made (in the form of a survey) but participation in any evaluation is optional.
