Australian Automotive: then, now and beyond?
Event description
Exhibition Launch and Panel Discussion
October 8, 2021 marks fifty years since the official opening of the Borg-Warner transmission plant in Lavington. The factory produced manual and automatic transmissions for cars produced at home and abroad including Chrysler, Ford, Maserati and even the London Taxi Company. At its peak, it employed over 1,200 people.
The operations at the factory faced frequent challenges; from fluctuations in the industry, including the impact of government policy, and changes to the automotive market. On the 31 October 2014, the plant ceased operations after forty-four years.
To launch the new exhibition Changing Gears: Borg-Warner to DSI, join us for a lively panel discussion exploring the history of the local automotive industry and possibilities for the future.
Refreshments provided.
