  1. Workshops (General Admission)

    1. In Good Hands - Workshop with Cate Kennedy - General ticket

General Admission - Limited Spaces What makes us settle into a story, confident that the author is in control, guiding us along a path designed to intrigue and satisfy us? In this workshop Cate Kennedy will cover some key elements to constructing a compelling and memorable short story. She will talk about the techniques that give your reader the sense that they are "in good hands" with you, the writer, from the very first sentence. Cate will be deconstructing each stage of Michael Ondaatje's great quote: "The first line of every story should be the same: Trust me. This will take time, but there is order here, very faint and very human." to outline ways an author signals they have their hands on the wheel, establishing and setting up a subtle order and pattern which rewards close attention and focus over the timeframe of the story's narrative.

    3. Surreality and Strangeness - Workshop with Omar Musa - General ticket

General Admission - Limited Spaces In this generative short story workshop, Omar Musa will take you through how he reverse engineers fiction from surreal, uncanny images, or dreamlike seeds. Rather than starting with a plot or character, we'll begin with the bizarre and build outward, discovering how a single strange detail, artwork or reverie can be teased out into a compelling narrative. This workshop is about leaning into ambiguity and playfulness, blurring the lines between reality and surreality, and trying to achieve the literary trinity Elizabeth Bishop spoke about: a balance between accuracy, spontaneity and mystery.

    4. How Do I Make My Stories Weirder? - Workshop with Jane Rawson - General ticket

General Admission - Limited spaces Would you like to make your short story a little bit weirder? If your story is dull, lacking in ideas, or feels a bit pedestrian, this workshop will give you some tips to get it off the straight and narrow. We’ll look at where you can get ideas, how you can bring odd ideas together, how you can find the gaps in history, how you can use voice to make things stranger, and how to bring in some off-beat perspectives. Suited to emerging or established writers, those with a story underway and those just starting out.

    1. Opening Night Celebration - General ticket

General Admission For this year's festival, the Friday celebration is not like any ordinary Opening Night. Instead of speeches, we are treating you to a Quiz Night, a celebration of writers and writing that we should all know and love. With plenty of finger foods, hilarious games and prizes, join us for an evening where you get to mingle with writers, show off your knowledge and perhaps even learn a thing or two. Think a short but sharp Quiz Night with a twist. And once it's all over we'll turn the music up and dance. No need to be part of a group. Just get a ticket and we'll make sure you're on a table. Who knows, you might even be on the same team as your favourite writer.
