Australian Womens Film Festival
Event description
The Australian Womens Film Festival (AWFF) is a short film festival created by women, for women in Sydney on Sunday 14 March 2021 (after being postponed in 2020).
The AWFF program will feature a curated panel discussion with the AWFF judging panel (Teresa Palmer, Rachel Griffiths, Sue Maslin & Jane Hastings), a screening of the finalist films and an award presentation.
AWFF aims to support, encourage +
celebrate female storytellers by giving them a platform to showcase their talent both in front + behind
the camera. Men are not excluded from entering AWFF, but they must be willing to work
with women!
A unique aspect of AWFF films is that all films must have 3/5 key female creatives (Writer, Director, Producer, DOP and Editor) which is designed to encourage the inclusion of women in the industry. Men are not excluded from entering AWFF, but they must be willing to work with women. All films must also pass the Bechdel test - a measure of the representation of women in fiction. The Bechdel test asks if the work features at least two women that talk to each about a topic other than a man (or without referencing a man) and was included to encourage filmmakers to consider their portrayal of women in film and transcend traditional character stereotypes.
