Oriental Ink Art Learning

Oriental Ink Art is more than painting with brush and ink.

Shaped through centuries of cultural and artistic development, it has become a distinctive visual language for observing nature, understanding form, using space, creating rhythm and expressing artistic mood. Across nine weeks, you will begin with the cultural foundations of ink art, traditional materials and essential brush-and-ink techniques. From there, you will explore the symbolism and artistic expression of the Four Gentlemen, before moving into traditional landscapes, flowers and birds. The series also introduces the idea of Seeing Within Through Art, giving you space to reflect on the relationship between artistic practice, observation and inner awareness.

A 9-Week Journey

The Oriental Ink Art Learning series runs across 9 weekly classes, held every Saturday from 11am. Each class lasts approximately 2 - 2.5 hours with breaks in between.

You’ll learn progressively from week to week, building your brush-and-ink skills while developing a deeper understanding of the culture and artistic thinking behind the practice.

Rather than experiencing ink art through isolated one-off workshops, the series gives you time to build familiarity and confidence. As your technique develops, so too will your appreciation of the cultural and artistic traditions behind the practice.

Stage One: Discovering Ink Art and the Four Treasures of the Study

You will begin by exploring the foundations of Oriental Ink Art and becoming familiar with the Four Treasures of the Study. You’ll learn how the brush, ink, paper and inkstone work together, while developing the basic techniques that will support the rest of your learning.

Stage Two: The Four Gentlemen

You will explore the classical subjects of plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum. Along the way, you will discover their cultural symbolism, artistic character and expressive qualities, while continuing to develop control, rhythm and confidence with the brush.

Stage Three: Landscapes, Flowers and Birds

Your learning will then expand into traditional landscape, flower and bird subjects. You will be introduced to richer ideas of composition, space, rhythm, atmosphere and the expressive interpretation of nature. This stage gives you more room to bring technique, observation and personal interpretation together.

Stage Four: Seeing Within Through Art

The final stage brings cultural understanding, artistic practice and personal experience together. Through a more reflective approach to painting, you will explore the relationship between observation, awareness and artistic expression.

The structure gives you a clear learning progression, while allowing the teaching artist to adapt the subjects, depth, and pace to your experience, progress, and learning needs.

Our aim is not simply to show you how to complete an artwork. We want you to understand the cultural context, aesthetic thinking, symbolism and ways of seeing that have shaped Oriental art over generations. From this foundation, you will gradually move into technique, artistic interpretation and your own personal expression.

We hope you leave with more than a finished artwork or a new skill. You will also take away a deeper appreciation of the culture and artistic thinking behind the tradition, together with a new way of bringing beauty, observation and creativity into everyday life.

The Oriental Ink Art Learning series is a progressive 9-week learning experience. Your booking reserves a place for the full series rather than for individual classes.

As each class builds on previous learning, we encourage you to attend the full series wherever possible. We understand, however, that you may occasionally need to miss a class. To support continuity of learning, we will include an additional catch-up component, allowing participants to revisit important techniques, concepts, or learning areas they may have missed.
