Autism in Practice: Adapting Environments, Communication & Support (Advancing)

This advancing session will build on foundational autism understanding and focus on practical classroom application. Participants will use seven key areas of the Briarwood Standard - communication, structure, adult support, seeing the world through the pupil’s eyes, sensory needs, surroundings and key individual notes - as a planning lens for improving provision.

The session will explore structured teaching principles, including TEACCH-style approaches, visual schedules, work systems, task organisation and visual clarity. Participants will also consider communication access, consistent adult responses, sensory regulation, capable environments and how to record pupil-specific strategies clearly so that support is consistent and reviewed for impact. The session aims to help participants leave with a practical support plan or adaptation for one pupil, routine or transition.

This module has been accredited by the NCFE and can be considered when working towards the NCFE Award. Participants are required to complete five modules, including the mandatory module.
