Description

Surf sessions designed specifically for people living with Parkinson's

Fridays 12, 19, 26 June & 5 July 2026 1.30pm - 3.30pm

These sessions are run by experienced surf coaches and have been designed with input for Parkinson's Nurses, Physios and representatives from Parkinson's UK.

Whether you are new to surfing or have lost your confidence in the water since being diagnosed, these sessions are open to anyone wanting to experience the benefits surfing can offer to those living with Parkinson's. For some, surfing might be done lying down and for others, they might be on their feet. The goal of these sessions is to boost physical and mental wellbeing through accessing the joy of being in the ocean in a safe, supported environment.

Group numbers are small and we have the support of volunteers in the water to help with catching boards and lending a helping hand if needed. Sessions start with an intro from the coaches before walking down to the beach and have a led warm up. You will be in the water for approximately 1 hr and will begin in knee deep water. The coaches will tailor each session to meet the needs and experience of the group - if you are an experienced surfer then you might head further out back knowing that you have the eyes and support of a dedicated coach to help you feel safe.

The Tubestation will be open during the day if you'd like to arrive a bit early or stay for a chat afterwards.

We meet at George's Surf School which is opposite the Beach Car Park and below the Tubestation.

FAQs

  • What are the benefits of surfing for someone with Parkinson's?
    • Improved balance

    • Improved coordination

    • Low impact cardio fitness

    • Reduced fear of falling

    • Mood booster by accessing blue space

    • Builds social connections

    • Encourages mindfulness

  • How physical fit do I have to be to take part?

This is very personal and we trust you to judge whether or not you feel fit enough to take part. The main physical requirement to take part is that you are able to get up and done off of the floor (with a hand or support if needed). This is to ensure you are safe in the water. You will also need to walk from the surf school base to the water and back (this can be 500m at low tide).

  • Do I have stay in the water for the whole session?

Absolutely not. You stay in as long as you want. We will have some camp chairs set up if you need a rest and dry robes available to keep you warm.

  • What experience do your coaches have?

All of George's Surf School coaches are qualified and experienced Surf Coaches and SLSGB Lifeguards. George has completed specific training to be able to deliver Parkinson's specific activities with Active Cornwall and Parkinson's UK. Many of our coaches have also completed Mental Health Awareness training.

  • Do I need my own wetsuit?

No. You can bring your own if you have one. If not, please let us know on the registration form and we will arrange on the day for you.

  • Can someone help me get in to my wetsuit?

For safeguarding reasons, the coaches can't help you in / out of your wetsuit, but can help do zips up and get boots on / off. If you think you might need assistance we recommend someone coming with you to help (and cheer you on).

  • What if I need a wee?

There are toilets at the beach for before and after the session. It is very normal for surfers to have a sneaky wee in their wetsuit in the sea! We suggest 'flushing' your wetsuit afterwards. The coaches will run through this with you :-)

  • I'm keen but feel a bit nervous...

That is completely normal, particularly if this is a new activity or you have been out of the water for a while. If you'd like to come and watch to see how sessions run then just pop down (no need to book).
