Awe Under the Stars: Discovering our Local Microbats

Imagine being able to catch insects in the air whilst flying at 100km per hour? Or eating up to half your body weight of insects in one night? Welcome to the fascinating and awe inspiring world of our local native microbats!   

Come and join us at Goolwa Library to discover more about our amazing nocturnal microbats and learn why they are so important to our ecology.

Join husband and wife team, Drs Monika and Martin Rhodes, for a night full of discoveries and stories. Bring questions, enthusiasm, torches and good footwear. Martin and Monika have studied and worked with bats for over 30 years and are excited to share their knowledge and passion. Following a short presentation on some of our local microbat species, we will finish the evening with a bat walk outdoors – hopefully rounding up the night with a view of foraging bats.

Many bat calls are not audible to humans, so we will use bat monitors to detect their calls. As each bat has its own call pattern, we will be able to determine the species that we encounter.

This session is family friendly; any children will need to be supervised by an adult.

Please wear enclosed shoes and bring along a small torch if you have one.

Please arrive at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start.
