Baby Safe Program: Safe Sleeping: Small Group class

Safe Sleeping for babies 0- 12 months of age

This class is suitable from 28 weeks of pregnancy onwards or any time in the first 12 months after your baby is born.

Your program includes:

• Safe Sleeping Small Group class (face-to-face)

• Hands-on practice in swaddling (wrapping) a newborn baby

• One-year unlimited access to the Safe Sleeping e-learning module, including the Safe Sleeping Video series.

In the face-to-face small group class, Safe Sleeping, you will learn:

• Reducing the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI), including SIDS

• How to create a safe sleep environment for your newborn baby

• Safe wrapping (swaddling) for sleep and to promote normal hip development

• Use of a safe sleeping bag

• The importance of avoiding over-heating (thermal stress)

• Dressing your baby for safe sleep

• Bedding and bedding amount

• Room temperature

• Cot or bassinet- which is recommended and why?

• Car seats, car capsules and car travel with a newborn baby

• Use of baby slings and carriers

• How to determine which nursery products are safe for your baby

• Nursery products that are unsafe for babies, are not recommended, and can pose a risk of SUDI, including SIDS ('cot death')

• New Federal legislation (July 2024) - New mandatory standards for infant sleep products

Class format:

Face-to-face in a small group class held at Prahran High School, Windsor.

Total program length

• 2.25 hours face-to-face, small group class

• 1-hour of self-directed online learning (including video content and self-tests)

Practical component:

• Demonstration and hands-on practice of techniques to safely wrap (swaddle) a newborn for sleep and to promote normal hip development.

• Attendees will have their own baby (manikin) to practice on.

If your baby was born preterm and required admission to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and/or the Special Care Nursery (SCN), we also have a special version of the Safe Sleeping e-learning package for preterm babies transitioning from NICU/SCN to home. Please let us know when you book this class so we can set you up with access.

• $100 per person / $200 per couple (Inclusive of 10% GST), plus $0.50 booking fee

(Valued at $275 per couple if the class, videos, and e-learning resources are purchased separately.

Associate Professor Rosemarie Boland: Director: Precious Care Australia

PhD, Master of Nursing, Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse

A/Professor Rosemarie Boland a newborn educator, neonatal intensive care nurse and midwife with over 30 years’ experience. She specialises in providing first aid training for expectant parents, and parents and families of newborn babies and ex-premature infants. In addition, she develops training programs, clinical practice guidelines and resources for medical, nursing, midwifery and paramedic healthcare professionals in Victoria in her role as a statewide perinatal educator with the newborn emergency transport service.

A/Professor Rose Boland has over 35 peer reviewed publications, has written text book chapters and helps develop guidelines for Ambulance Victoria around obstetric and newborn emergencies.

The Baby Safe Program was developed by A/Professor Rose Boland. All face-to-face, Deluxe Program classes and private sessions are taught A/Professor Rose Boland.
