Gender Equity Victoria invites you to our event, Back on Track: Gender Responsive Budgeting and the GEN VIC Annual General Meeting.

Gender Responsive budgeting is essential for women's equality to be realised in Victoria. We know that in 2019 alone, women worked on average an additional 59 days more than men to have equal pay; that women performed approximately 64.4 percent of their average weekly working time on unpaid care work; and that women’s superannuation balances at retirement were roughly 47 percent lower than men’s. And this only names a few areas which gender norms and the economy intersect to disadvantage women.

We need a state government budget that understands gender, and works to correct economic inequality to ensure that Victorian women and girls are equal.

This event puts a spotlight on gender and government budgets, bringing together renowned and leading experts across Australia including:

Emeritus Professor Rhonda Sharp AM

University of South Australia

Rhonda Sharp AM is Emeritus Professor at the University of South Australia. She was formerly a Research Chair and Professor of Economics at the Hawke Research Institute, University of South Australia. The focus of her work has been to integrate a gender perspective into economic and social policies and government budgets through research, writing and working with governments, NGOS and international organizations. During the 1980s she designed and implemented the first women’s budget at the State level in Australia for the South Australia government. She was invited to present the Australian innovations at the UN in 2008. She was a founding member of the International Association for Feminist Economics and served as its President in 2000. Her ongoing research collaborations include women and superannuation, a capabilities approach to aged care policy and intrahousehold resource allocation.

Professor Lyn Craig

The University of Melbourne

Lyn Craig is Professor of Sociology and Social Policy and ARC Future Fellow in the School of Social and Political Sciences at The University of Melbourne. She researches the contemporary family, work and social change, with emphasis on gender equity and time demands of employment, family care and social reproduction; intersections between the family and the economy; life course transitions; inclusion, youth, population ageing and generational equity; and comparative family and social policy. Before joining UoM in March 2017, Lyn was Scientia Professor and Director of the Social Policy Research Centre at UNSW Sydney. She is an Affiliate of the Centre for Time Use Research at Oxford University and an elected Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Dr Maree Overall

Emily's List CEO

Maree Overall is the CEO of EMILY’s List Australia, a financial and political support network for Labor women candidates. With a background in science and a PhD in Biochemistry, Maree had a 7-year post-doctoral career in the university sector that also involved public and political advocacy for medical research. Upon leaving academia she forged a path in the small business of conference management mainly for the association industry. Before taking on the CEO role at ELA, Maree was Senior Advisor to Minister Fiona Richardson during the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence. Her main responsibility was for the development and implementation of the Strategy for the Prevention of Family Violence and All Forms of Violence Against Women and for key aspects relating to women's leadership, economic security, STEMM and health and well-being in preparation of Victoria's first Gender Equality Strategy.
