Join us in donating books from AAPI authors to empower and uplift Asian American high school students in Manhattan Chinatown and the Lower East Side through the gift of storytelling!

Project by Project (PbP), in partnership with Chinatown Youth Initiatives, Chinese American Planning Council, Chinatown Partnership Local Development Corporation, and Chinatown Business Improvement District (BID), is donating books to local NYC high school students dedicated to volunteering and uplifting Chinatown and Lower East Side communities.

One of the main beneficiaries of this book drive will be the 150+ students participating in Chinatown Youth Initiatives' Chinatown Beautification Day.

Peach Blossom Spring by Melissa Fu - A novel about war, migration, and the power of telling our stories. Peach Blossom Spring follows three generations of a Chinese family on their search for a place to call home.
Brown Girls by Daphne Palasi Andreades - A poignant coming-of-age novel that celebrates friendship, identity, and the unique experiences of young women and their immigrant families from Queens, New York.
Chlorine by Jade Song - A gripping psychological thriller that unravels the dark secrets lurking beneath the surface of a seemingly idyllic suburban neighborhood.
The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen - A beautifully illustrated graphic novel that weaves together fairytales and family relationships, exploring the power of storytelling and the complexities of identity.
Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo - A compelling historical fiction novel that follows the journey of a young woman discovering her identity and navigating love and self-acceptance in the backdrop of 1950s San Francisco's Chinatown and lesbian nightclub culture.

[Chinatown Youth Initiatives (CYI)]

Chinatown Youth Initiatives (CYI)'s mission is to support high school and college-aged Asian American leaders to address the needs of NYC Chinatown and Asian American communities through workshops, leadership trainings, and service projects.

[CYI's Chinatown Beautification Day]

The students who participate in Chinatown Beautification Day come from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. They're committed to a day of volunteering, workshops, panels, and group discussions that explore social justice issues and topics relevant to Chinatown--showing their compassion and genuine concern for the well-being and cleanliness of the neighborhood.

This demonstrates their sense of civic duty and desire to be team players--collaborating with other participants to understand the value of collective effort.

The youth set an example for others as they walk through Chinatown cleaning up its streets which in turn, fosters a sense of pride within the community.

[Chinese American Planning Council (CPC)]

Chinese American Planning Council (CPC)'s mission is to promote the social and economic empowerment of Chinese American, immigrant, and low-income communities.

[Chinatown Partnership Local Development Corporation & Chinatown Business Improvement District (BID)]

Since 2012, Chinatown Partnership has been working with the Chinatown Business Improvement District to engage the community and lead efforts to improve the neighborhood’s physical environment and promote the area as a special destination to live, work, and visit
