Description

Promotion doesn’t end on publication day — you’re only getting started.

You’ve published a book. But what about getting it out there, and keeping it in front of readers for years instead of weeks? Author, journalist, publisher and bookseller Michael Burge has distilled this fraught process into a series of empowering steps on how to give your book a lovely long tail in the marketplace. Join him to explore brand building, the essential strategic partnerships in the book trade, and maximising the chances of your work reaching the most readers. This session will get traditionally published and self-published writers ready for the long game of an author’s life. You'll also have an opportunity for Q&A and troubleshooting your specific project.

Learning outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will:

  • Consider your author branding and develop a personal brand for your books.

  • Learn to understand your local industry and capitalise on opportunities to promote your work.

  • Develop practical steps for promoting your book through to publication day, and far beyond.

  • Plan ahead for your long-term career as an author.

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on author sustainability; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is suitable for traditionally & self-published writers of all levels and backgrounds.

About Michael

Michael Burge’s debut rural noir Tank Water made a splash in the Australian book trade on release and the ripples are still spreading with its sequel Dirt Trap. Passionate about helping authors steer their books through the marketplace without getting ripped off, he’s learned how to capitalise on every opportunity for readers to encounter new work. A journalist, event and workshop presenter, he is also a bookseller and publisher at High Country Books, author of the popular writing, publishing and promotion guide Write Regardless! and is a board member of BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival.
