Do you live next to bushland, reserves, parks, or natural areas?

Backing Onto Bush is a free, interactive workshop designed for people living in peri-urban and rural residential areas who want to better understand the relationship between bushland, bushfire, and their property.

Delivered by Healthy Land & Water's Fire Ecology & Preparedness Team, this workshop combines practical bushfire preparedness information with an engaging field walk to help you better understand the landscape around your home.

What to expect - The workshop includes:

  • A practical discussion on bushfire risk, preparedness, and living safely alongside bushland

  • Information about local vegetation, habitats, and how fire influences the landscape

  • An interactive guided bushwalk where you'll learn to observe and interpret the environment around you

  • Opportunities to ask questions and discuss local challenges with fire and land management specialists

What you'll learn - By attending this workshop, you'll gain a better understanding of:

  • The vegetation and habitats surrounding your property

  • How to identify and assess bushfire fuels in the landscape

  • How fire shapes local ecosystems

  • Signs of past fire activity and environmental change

  • Practical steps to improve your property's preparedness

  • Where to find reliable information and guidance relevant to your area

What to bring- The workshop includes a short outdoor field component. Please come prepared with:

  • Closed-in shoes

  • Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt

  • Hat

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Sunscreen

  • Rain jacket (if required)

This workshop is free to attend. Light catering and refreshments will be provided.
