Special 10th Anniversary Screening: I Am Not Your Negro

Brookline for Racial Justice & Equity is commemorating James Baldwin's birthday with a 10th anniversary screening of I Am Not Your Negro at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. One of the most influential figures in the American civil rights movement, Baldwin's words on race, power, and American identity feel as urgent now as when he first wrote them. The film was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards and won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary.

Dr. Kandice Sumner is METCO's newly confirmed President and CEO. A nationally recognized educational leader, she's served as Associate Principal at New Heights Charter School of Brockton, taught doctoral students at UMass-Boston since 2019, and co-founded Educators for Antiracism, whose annual conference draws thousands of educators worldwide.

Malcolm Cawthorne is METCO Director for Brookline Public Schools and a lifelong Brookline resident. A BHS grad himself, he made history in 2002 as the school's first Black head football coach and later co-developed its Racial Awareness and Identity course. He's also a longtime faculty leader of Race Reels, BHS's documentary film series.

BRJE was founded in 2016 as a grassroots, community-based organization to address issues of racial inequity in Brookline and to build a multiracial coalition to dismantle structural racism.
