    Event description

Join us at Gloucester Gallery for a Bangalow Palm Inflorescence Random Weave workshop during the Hanging Together - Artists of Wallamba Exhibition and learn from the wonderful Susie Oldfield.

In the workshop, Susie will be sharing the random weave technique to make a very simple basket or small sculptural piece but also giving ideas on surface design as well as applying the technique to sculptural work and other natural fibres to make string that can be used with the process.

Susie Oldfield has been immersed in the world of fibre arts for many years, but has recently delved into traditional Indigenous techniques, particularly focusing on Bangalow Palm inflorescence random weave, string making with Lomandra and Day Lily leaves, as well as harakeke (New Zealand Flax) weaving and processing. Finding satisfaction in using natural materials, she believes that the material itself dictates the creative process, leading to a meditative experience.Over the past five years, Susie has achieved notable success with her Bangalow sculptural pieces, securing three first prizes and exhibiting at prestigious venues such as Gallery 76 in Sydney, Great Lakes Art Society Lake St Gallery, and Macleay Valley Art Gallery. Just last week she added a 2nd prize in the 3D section for her work at the GLAS Open exhibition.

Additionally, she has conducted contemporary basket making courses at GLAS and Nabiac Farmers Market, along with demonstrations at Manning Made. Susie cherishes working with ephemeral materials, often utilising unwanted garden waste, which not only minimises material costs but also emphasises sustainability. Emphasising the relaxation and laughter that accompanies her process, she stresses that the material guides her, leading to a stress-free and spontaneous creative journey.
