These two free waterways managers' and public workshops will be hosted in partnership between North East CMA, Wodonga Urban Landcare Network, and Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI).

Natural wetlands in southeastern Australia commonly include a component of Phragmites australis (Common Reed), Typha spp. (Cumbungi) or Juncus ingens (Giant Rush). These tall macrophytes provide important habitat and ecosystem functions.

Determining when management is appropriate and justified, and the most effective methods to use in natural wetlands (where excavation is not an option) can be challenging. Many attempts to control these taxa have not been monitored limiting the ability to share learnings.

Please join Fiona Sutton for an in-depth workshop on managing vegetation in these waterways. Fiona and her team have undertaken a literature review and held interviews and workshops with waterway managers and ecologists to synthesise the latest knowledge regarding the biology, ecology and management of these taxa.

Scientist – Botany

Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research, DEECA

Fiona is a plant ecologist with a knowledge of the flora and fauna of south-eastern Australia, specialising in floodplain, coastal saltmarsh, forest and grassy ecosystems. She has an interest in ecological management and restoration, particularly associated with invasive species and changes to hydrology, as well as habitat monitoring to track responding changes over time.

This event is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program, the Victorian Government, and Melbourne Water, under the guidance of the Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI), with the support of One Tree Planted, City of Ballarat, Coliban Water, Zoos Victoria, and catchment management authorities.
