Event description
On Sunday, 8th September at the Portugal Madeira Club, Marrickville! We launch the BARELY HUMAN zine collection alongside some of Sydney's best contemporary underground bands and a DIY swap meet for all your merch trade & sale needs! Featuring:
BED WETTIN' BAD BOYS
ITCHY & THE NITS
OSBO
PHOTOGENIC
JACKY WÜNDER
MORE ABOUT THE SWAP MEET
In honour of the hundreds of unsold 7"s, t-shirts and tapes sitting under the bed of a DIY band near you, we host an opportunity to swap them for the similarly neglected cultural artefacts in the house next door! Tables will be available for DIY distros, record labels bands and punters, and everyone is encouraged to bring down unwanted records, unworn band tees, loose tapes and zines to trade/swap/sell with others on the day. The bands start at 3pm, but swap meet will begin at 2pm to allow for a lower sensory hour for anyone who requires or would appreciate it.----
MORE ABOUT THE BANDS
BED WETTIN' BAD BOYS
Fifteen years of DIY rock band BED WETTIN' BOYS has seen them chart a path from a 2009 KISS covers cassette, to being widely acknowledged as the "best/worst band in Sydney", to having their first LP 'Ready for Boredom' labelled 'the greatest rock album of all time' by a Guardian music columnist. An important and sometimes underrecognised contributor to 21st Century DIY in this country, playing live for you in the year 2024!

ITCHY & THE NITS
Who said Sydney lost its sense of humour? Three-piece garage punks ITCHY & THE NITS kick off the downer vibes to write about crabs, fleas, parasites and bozos, and jam on a sound that veers from garage Nuggets to the best of THE URINALS. Their just released LP 'The Worst Of...' will go down as one of 2024's best!

PHOTOGENIC
Part of a new wave of Sydney DIY bands that kicked off around 2017, PHOTOGENIC have come back after some lost lockdown momentum for their best sets yet. Adding to the rock 'n' roll strut of their 2018 demo are a series of soon-to-be-released tracks which push their post-punk sound VS proto-punk sensibility to new heights!

OSBO
Formed in 2018 to fill a VOID in the sonic palette of contemporary Australian hardcore, OSBO have become a staple of Sydney line-ups in recent years. Experience the frantic chaos of OSBO with a copy of their newly released 7" in one hand, and a Super Bock in the other at the Portugal Madeira Club.

JACKY WÜNDER
Have you seen JACKY WÜNDER? Sightings include flogging records in Ashfield, wielding a chainsaw in an art gallery, or playing the streets of Leipzig. No recordings have been captured for public distribution, so get it live instead.

MORE ABOUT BARELY HUMAN
BARELY HUMAN is an ongoing underground music zine and podcast series beginning in 2015 with the Barely Human; I Like Randy Newman zine published by MoodWar. After zines about BUTTHOLE SURFERS, COUNTRY TEASERS and LOW LIFE, BARELY HUMAN evolved into a documentary-style podcast series that chartered the (d)evolution of underground music from its mid-century countercultural ties, through to subcultural practices of punk, and into the contemporary where such music is barely considered cultural at all. Since the podcast, a number of zines and mixtapes have been published on a mail order basis, which recently sold out... to celebrate, all written materials have been collected in book form for the first time, taking in podcast scripts, unpublished notes, essays and zine discussions. The book: BARELY HUMAN: DISPATCHES FROM AN UNDERGROUND MUSIC ANTI-HISTORY (2015-2024) is a self-published collection, with a limited edition first run of 150. These will be available for sale first at this launch, with sale to the public to commence the following week!
