Embark on a melodious journey through Hamilton Gallery’s major exhibition, Emerging From Darkness: Faith, Emotion & The Body In The Baroque.

Deep-dive into the rich, evocative music of key 17th century Italian composers with Barbara Strozzi, Claudio Monteverdi and Luigi Rossi.

This concert offers a glimpse into the richness of the Italian baroque, the beauty of its music brought to life with instruments and voices. The texts of this music, so important to composers of the time, seek to move listeners with their highly affective poetry, whether through exploring the conflicts of the five senses in Barbara Strozzi’s madrigals, the spiritual and moral reflections of Claudio Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale, or the desperate pangs of the mortal life and the longing for heavenly release in the oratorios of Luigi Rossi.

This program will bring together many fine musicians, including John Weretka, Laura Vaughan, Hannah Lane, Timothy Reynolds, Kate MacFarlane and Quin Thomson under the direction of singer-director Stephen Grant.

Moments of musical darkness intertwine with luminescent notes in the enclaves of the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre’s recently renovated Handbury Auditorium.

A concert for lovers of live entertainment, classical music, art, history, and drama, tickets are $75 each and include entry to the Emerging From Darkness exhibition.

Director: Stephen Grant – singer and conductor, Head of Voice at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and director of the vocal ensemble e21. His professional career began in Europe, where he established working relationships with some of Europe's best-known early music ensembles — Sequentia, the Ferrara Ensemble and Ensemble Organum de Paris, with whom he performed and made over 30 CD recordings. He has also premiered a number of contemporary works by Saariaho (Paris), Fritsch (Bonn), Staub (Göteborg & Saarbrücken), Cheetham (Melbourne) and Thomson (Hobart). A key research interest is the music of the 17th century and he enjoys both singing and directing this fascinating repertoire.
