Conversation #2: Big Ideas on Small Stages
Playwright Suzie Miller in conversation with Crimson Rosella's Creative Director Lindy Hume
Theatre-making outside the metro mainstream is fast gaining momentum nationally. Over the coming months we’ll be inviting Australian theatre artists of all stripes to join us for a chat, to share what they love about making theatre, what’s special about the small scale storytelling experience, what excites them about creative life here in the South Coast, and more. In this first conversation in our series of informal conversations Lindy Hume pulls up a barstool with Olivier-award winning playwright Suzie Miller.
Amid an intense schedule of international and Australian theatre, film and TV projects (her new play Inter Alia opens at the National Theatre in London later this year), Suzie Miller will share her love of small-scale theatre, beginning with her very first play Cross Sections at the Old Fitz Hotel in Woolloomooloo in 2004, and continuing today with impactful one-person works including her celebrated plays RBG: Of Many One and Prima Facie.
Virtuosic and courageous, Miller's multi-award winning play Prima Facie starring Jodie Comer (playing a young barrister suddenly faced with the inbuilt patriarchy of the legal system when she herself is sexually assaulted) recently scorched a trail on London’s West End and Broadway, securing her global recognition. Legal and police reforms as a result of the play are proof of art’s ability to change the world for the better.
