Bathurst Refugee Support Group Public Lecture
Event description
Bathurst Refugee Support Group supported by Charles Sturt University host a free public lecture welcoming Mr Paul Power, CEO of the Refugee Council of Australia.
Paul Power will speak about the agenda for refugee policy reform for the next Australian Parliament, looking beyond the Federal Election at the questions Ministers and Parliamentarians should be considering to support humane and practical policies for refugees and people seeking asylum.
As head of the national umbrella body on refugee policy, he helps to lead NGO advocacy with the Australian Government and United Nations agencies. Paul is a board member of the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network (APRRN), having served in leadership roles with the network since 2012.In 2023-24, Paul was co-chair of the global Consultations on Resettlement and Complementary Pathways, which draws together UNHCR, governments, NGO and refugee representatives from nations involved in refugee resettlement. He previously co-chaired this forum in 2011-12.
Under Paul’s leadership, RCOA has been supporting refugee representatives to participate in key international meetings since 2007. Between 2015 and 2019, RCOA co-facilitated meetings which led to the development of independent refugee-led advocacy networks at state, national, Asia-Pacific and global levels - networks that RCOA now works closely with in advocacy.
