Prominent Indonesian fashion designers Lia Mustafa (House of L’Mar), Nonita Purnamaningdyah (Purana Indonesia) and Auguste Soesastro (Kraton) discuss their collections and take you on a journey into the cultural significance of batik, listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. Visiting Australia as part of a creative exchange that fosters connections between Australia and Indonesia, they will be joined by three emerging Australian fashion designers Josh Deane (Palawa), Canwen Zhao and Nikki Edgar who were recent guests in 'Batik Bootcamp' where they participated in workshops, networking and produced collections for several runway events at Jogja Fashion Week. In this presentation you will hear their unique insights into fashion and culture across countries and are invited to stay and network alongside an exhibition of their incredible garments that offer a flavour of Indonesia’s unique fashion scene. The panel will contribute to the global dialogue on fashion sustainability and cultural appreciation, and be chaired by Dr Tassia Joannides, Associate Dean Design from RMIT Fashion and Textiles.

RMIT Fashion and Textiles Design and the Australian Embassy Jakarta are proud to continue a partnership that began in 2024, marking the 75th Anniversary of Australia-Indonesia bilateral relationship. For MFF 2025 their collaboration aims to deepen fashion industry networks and celebrate cultural textile practices. The two institutions share a passion for the potentials of fashion and textiles to share stories and culture, and are committed to showcasing emerging and established fashion and textile design that celebrates culture and exchange. The presentation and exhibition for MFF provides opportunities for conversations, listening and sharing.

Presenters and featured works by:

Lia Mustafa. Founder of L’Mar House, recipient of Australia Award 2016 short course – Global Readiness for Indonesia’s Women Entrepreneurs in Fashion and Textile.

Nonita Respati. Founder, Commissioner and Creative Director of Purana Batik. Alumni of the International Business Readiness in the Fashion and Textiles Sector short course the Australian Government’s Australia Awards.

Auguste Soesastro. Founder & Designer, Kraton. University of Sydney and ANU graduate. Kraton collections have been showcased in New York, London, Paris, Milan, Rome, Singapore, Jakarta.

Josh Deane (Palawa). Emerging Indigenous artist from the Kabi Kabi lands on the Sunshine Coast. Recipient of the Kinaway Award for Social Media Excellence 2022 and Victorian Indigenous Creative of the year 2023.

Canwen Zhao. Fashion label “35 Thirty-Five”. Shortlisted for the 2023 Sustainable Fashion Award, exhibited at the National Wool Museum in Australia.

Nikki Edgar. LCI graduate and Emerging Designer finalist in Fashions on the Field 2023

Led by Associate Dean Design, Dr Tassia Joannides, who recently presented at Jogja Fashion Week, Indonesia, as a guest of the Australian Embassy Jakarta.
