Bauhaus in New England: Architecture, Nature, and Visual Poetry

“Glass, wood, and light in dialogue with New England’s forests: a journey into the Bauhaus spirit through architecture, photography, and poetry.”
This evening class, introduces the revolutionary Bauhaus school and its surprising legacy in our own region. We will explore the movement’s history, principles, and the impact of Walter Gropius and his circle in New England, before turning to the instructor’s photographic work documenting Bauhaus-inspired houses as “poetic dialogues” between architecture and nature. Along the way, we will engage with selections from German Romantic poetry (including Eichendorff’s famous evocation of Waldeinsamkeit) to reflect on solitude, landscape, and modern design. By the end of the session, participants will gain a clearer understanding of Bauhaus ideas, recognize their relevance in everyday design, and connect them to the cultural and natural environment of New England. No prior knowledge of art, architecture, or German is required—just curiosity and openness to learning.

Mark Römisch was born in Cologne, Germany, and grew up in a modernist inspired home. He is a photographer and educator whose work explores the intersection of architecture, landscape, and cultural memory. His photographs have been exhibited and published internationally, most recently at ArtsWestchester in New York, and awawrded with a Mass Cultural Council Grant for Creative Individuals. He is an instructor in Harvard University’s Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. He previously taught at MIT, where he received the Levitan Excellence in Teaching Award. He serves on the Advisory Council for Arts, Culture, and Scholarship of the Foundation for Germans Abroad, Stiftung Verbundenheit. He is the author of Form and Landscape: Bauhaus in New England and Bauhaus New England – Portraits of an Architectural Legacy (Hirmer Publishers 2026). He lives with his family in a colonial-style house in Milton, MA.

Our classes are for everyone—whether you’re brand new to the topic or have been engaging with it for years, we encourage participation from people of all backgrounds, identities, and experience levels. - Why are there tickets at different prices?
Our tickets utilize a Pay-What-You-Can model so attendees can pay a range of prices based on what they are able to pay to allow for greater accessibility. Please select the price point that feels right for you.
- Can I eat during class?
While we do not serve food in the study, you are welcome to order and enjoy drinks during class and join us for a meal before or after class. We highly recommend making a reservation if you know you'll be dining with us. Visit www.lehr.haus/reservation to check availability and book a table.
- Getting to Lehrhaus?
Street parking is readily available on Washington Street or Beacon Street (Map). The meters all take quarters or can be paid through the ParkBoston or ParkMobile apps. The closest T stops are Union Square (Green Line D & E, 0.8 mile walk, or #109 bus) and Harvard Square (Red Line, 0.8 mile walk, or the #109 bus). There is a bus stop just out front, on Washington (#83 and #109).
