Grounded: A Clay, Community & Connection Project
Description
A simple, hands-on introduction to pottery through hand-building. Over eight weeks, participants will learn how to build and shape their pieces, add and remove clay, explore surface decoration techniques, experiment with basic glazing, and finish by exhibiting their completed work.
Using self-portrait or pet portrait as creative prompts, this facilitated workshop is designed for those new to pottery or anyone wanting a relaxed refresher of the basics. It is focused on hand-building only, with no wheel work.
The program is free to attend, with clay, glazing, firing and all required materials provided. Just bring an apron, your creative spark and a smile. A light evening tea with tea, coffee and biscuits will also be available.

FAQs
- Is there an age requirement?
Yes. Grounded is an adults-only program for participants aged 18 years and over.
- Do I need any pottery experience?
Not at all! Grounded is designed for people new to ceramics, as well as anyone wanting a refresher of the basics.
- What will we be making?
The main creative prompts are a self-portrait or pet portrait in clay. You’ll have plenty of freedom to interpret these in your own way, and there will also be opportunities to create additional pieces.
- Will we be using the pottery wheel?
No. Grounded focuses entirely on hand-building, including pinch, coil and slab techniques. There is no wheel work as part of this program.
- What if I’m nervous about joining or have accessibility needs?
Please reach out to us. We’re happy to answer questions or discuss any concerns or accessibility needs before you book. Grounded is intended to be a friendly, welcoming and low-pressure introduction to ceramics.
- Do I have to attend all eight weeks?
We strongly encourage you to attend each week. The program is structured so your work progresses through building, drying, firing and glazing, with each session building on the last.
- What happens to my work between sessions?
Your work will be stored at the studio while it dries and moves through the firing process, ready for you to continue working on at the appropriate stage.
- What happens at the end of the program?
The eight weeks finish with an exhibition of participants’ completed work, giving everyone a chance to see what the group has created and celebrate the end of the program.
- Can I bring alcohol?
No. Grounded and the Sanctuary Point Community Arts Cottage will be alcohol-free during the program.
- Will refreshments be available?
Yes. We’ll provide a simple evening tea with tea, coffee and biscuits during the sessions.
- Can I join Bay & Basin Bush Potters?
Absolutely! If you enjoy your time with us and would like to keep creating after Grounded, you’re very welcome to join Bay & Basin Bush Potters.
We offer regular studio sessions where members can continue developing their skills, working on their own projects and creating alongside our pottery community.
