Bazurka Summer Tour '25: Space Academy
Event description
Bazurka is a dynamic seven-piece band based in Wellington, New Zealand, bringing together an electrifying blend of vocals, trumpet, saxophone, double bass, guitar, percussion, and violin. Specializing in traditional folk songs from the rich tapestry of the Balkans, as well as captivating Greek folk music, Bazurka delivers an exhilarating musical experience that transports audiences to vibrant cultural landscapes.
Having last performed in Te Waipounamu in 2023, they are returning again to bring their music to the people of Mohua, WhakatÅ«, and ÅŒtautahi. Join us for an evening of joy and sorrow, light and darkness, that will have you dancing all night long.Â
Renowned for their infectious energy and spirited performances, Bazurka captivates audiences with their intricate musical abilities and heartfelt storytelling. Each show is a celebration of community, culture, and the joy of music, making Bazurka a must-see for anyone eager to experience the pulse of Balkan and Greek traditions reimagined through a contemporary lens.
Bazurka will be supported by local legend Despoina Barouni, and her band. Despoina (known as Betty) brings a new genre to the ÅŒtautahi Music Scene - Greek Folk! Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Despoina has created a project that introduces just a little bit of home to this far away land. The group’s debut gig was held in Christchurch’s Greek Community Hall in June 2024 and was a sold-out evening full of lively Greek music, dance and food. Joining Despoina this time is Liam Oliver (bouzouki), Nick Barounis (bouzouki), Dan Hodges (guitar), Pete Fleming (bass), Nelson Myers-Daly (riq), Fahim Imam (drums) and Shayan Zarakhsh (violin).Â
