Event description

Toora is proud to present an exciting opportunity to hear from Antoinette Braybrook AM.

Antoinette is a Kuku Yalanji woman, born in Victoria on Wurundjeri country. Antoinette has worked on the frontline of Aboriginal women’s safety for over 21 years and has been the CEO of Djirra since inception in 2002. Djirra is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation that provides legal and non-legal support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria who experience family violence, predominately women and their children.

During this session, Antoinette will speak about how the referendum impacted on Aboriginal women and children’s safety, what Reconciliation looks like in the wake of the referendum, and what we can all do to support Aboriginal women and their calls for investment in Aboriginal-led, self-determined solutions.

This session will also provide:

  • Examples of Djirra’s best practice early intervention and prevention strategies, designed by Aboriginal women for Aboriginal women.
  • An overview of the ongoing impacts of colonisation, including punitive policies and laws that disproportionately impact Aboriginal women, and what action we can take to amplify Aboriginal women’s calls for change.
  • An opportunity for organisations to engage in rethinking and redesigning their service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities.

For catering purposes, registrations are required for this event.

This session is aimed at staff of all levels from sector leaders to operational staff who are on the ground every day, working in the community sector in Canberra. Attendees will be invited to participate in a Q&A style session at the end.

This event is funded through an ACT Government grant thanks to the Community Services Directorate.
