Becoming With Art in Early Childhood is the title of a beautiful new Australian book curated by Dr Red Ruby Scarlet, for early childhood educators that explores arts practice across the education sector. As part of the celebration of its launch, Red and Jessica (a key contributor to the book), are putting art into practice.

This full day workshop set has been designed to bring together two specific approaches to arts practice. The first is the renowned ‘Playing With Clay’ workshop from the Art For Educators series created by Dr Red Ruby Scarlet (MultiVerse) and the second is the highly popular Aboriginal Art workshop from the Embedding Aboriginal Perspectives series created by Jessica Staines (Koori Curriculum).

Both workshops focus on resourcing educators to feel confident and capable about engaging with arts practice. Both workshops demonstrate how to be inspired by, and embed, Aboriginal perspectives into your everyday arts practice. Both workshops are practical hands-on experience that will prepare you with techniques and approaches to take into your classroom and enrich your curriculum. The day will begin with an introduction by Red and Jessica offering an overview of the day and creating a collaborative arts community. The two workshops will run concurrently in the morning and then again in the afternoon ensuring all delegates experience both. The day will conclude with a cuppa and collective reflection session for delegates to reconnect as a whole group and share their learning, creations and experiences. By the end of the day each delegate with be ready to step into their classrooms and put art into practice.

Playing With Clay

Dr Red Ruby Scarlet

This hands on workshop specially designed by Dr Red Ruby Scarlet is for educators to participate in learning both basic and creative ways to work with clay. By engaging in the actual process of presenting, teaching and caring for clay, participants will experience an arts based pedagogy that can then be practiced in the various educational settings in which they work with children of any age. Sometimes working with ‘art materials’ can feel scary but this workshop will put those fears at ease and the learning process will be delightful and meaningful. An engagement with the cultural histories of the materials opens up the relationship between becoming with Country and connection with it in everyday practice. The workshop will also offer some useful resources that can accompany a wonderful and inspiring journey to practicing art in your everyday curriculum.

Aboriginal Art Workshop

Aboriginal inspired art experience in an early childhood context is so much more than just collaged red, black and yellow flags and cotton bud dot paintings. This workshop will inspire educators and open them up to the many possibilities of how they can facilitate respectful Aboriginal inspired art experiences with children. Educators will acquire knowledge on both traditional and contemporary art practices and will be exposed to children’s literature and resources that support the inclusion of Aboriginal perspectives in their art curriculum. There will also be an opportunity to engage in a practical hands-on art experience.
