June/July Workshops: Beginners
Join facilitators Anna, Rose and Wendy and learn the ancient art of basket weaving to create your one-of-a-kind woven pieces. Using found, gathered and repurposed materials as supplied, explore ideas for making simple vessels. Learn how to make string from plant fibres or fabric and then turn that cordage into a small basket.
Experiment with coiling, twining, plaiting and knotting -basketry techniques which, once learned, can be applied to jewellery, mixed media, textile arts, basketry and more.
Explore the possibilities of these processes, using them to create texture and incorporate found items. Work over or around an object, create a basket, make a wearable piece or combine the processes to create something totally individual using just your hands, your creativity and found materials.
Anna and Wendy will be teaching jewellery making using stones / crystals etc so please bring an item with you if you wish to experiment with this technique
We will also discuss various plant fibres and materials and how to collect, store and prepare them for weaving.
This will be an excellent starting point for those thinking they might like to delve deeper into the world of basket weaving.
All materials are provided; however, feel free to bring along any items that you might like to add as decoration, eg seashells, buttons, rocks, nuts, feathers, driftwood bits, etc.
Morning tea provided.
What to bring:
Secateurs, scissors, an old towel, a big eye needle and a few pegs.
You can also bring some of your own plant fibres if you wish. If you have some potentially suitable frame materials, you are welcome to contact Anna for advice on storage and preparation prior to the weekend.
