Beginner DunDun Drumming class
Event description
All drums and sticks supplied
The dundun family of drums is played with sticks and comprises 3 different sized drums. These can be played all together by one person, or played individually with a stick in one hand and playing a bell with the other. Played together they are the driving force behind West African drumming music, keeping the timing for the band and the dancers, but just as importantly providing the distinctive melody for the rhythm.
In this one-off class I'll be starting from the basics of how to play this instrument. We'll cover how to hold the stick, how to use you arm and body to get the most power for the least effort, some basic independence exercises so your right and left hands can start to imagine doing different things, all in the context of learning some simple patterns, which together will create a wonderful interlocking melody with the other drums in the family. You'll see how your small part can contribute to the beauty of the melody.
