Learn to sew in this fun five-week beginner's sewing class open to adults and teens. Learn all the basics of sewing AND how to do it using a zero waste/upcycled ethos.
You will learn to:
- Confidently use a sewing machine
- Use the straight stitch and zigzag stitch.
- Finish the seam.
- Repurpose old garments and source great upcycled materials for your projects.
WEEK 1 – Getting to know your sewing machine + Getting to know each other.
WEEK 2 – Making a bag + Discussing sewing supplies.
Using what you already have (ribbons, shoelaces, straps)
What not to throw away? Recovering zips, buttons, fastenings etc. from garments destined to landfill.
Shopping in the op-shops - what to buy, what to avoid.
WEEK 3 – Making a pencil case or a coin purse + Talking about fabric.
Types of fabric – woven vs. knit
Buying new – spotlight vs. specialty shops
Threads and needles
Repurposing old garments
WEEK 4 – Making Japanese knot bag + Talking about sewing machines.
Taking care of your machine – cleaning and oiling
WEEK 5 – Design and make your own personal project.

No class on Labour Day!!
Participants should bring their own sewing machine (if you have one!), all other textiles and materials will be provided.
If you cannot access a sewing machine, you can still register, and we will provide one.
