This class series offers a combination of contact improvisation techniques to build upon, focusing on counterbalancing, supporting and exchanging weight, bearing, rolling, and spiralling in a playful, informed, supportive environment.
You will work with other bodies, responding to the sense of touch and connection in movement. No previous experience is necessary.
This foundational program offers the beginning tools needed to safely and confidently build upon skills to play contact improvisation with others.
Contact Dance: 3-Week ExplorationWeek
1: Foundations of Contact Improvisation
(Introduction to Core Concepts)
•Understanding weight sharing, balance, and counterbalance
•Developing sensitivity and awareness of a partner’s movements
•Basic rolling, sliding, and falling techniques
•Building trust through guided exercises and improvisational tasks•Group activities to foster a supportive and safe environment
Week 2: Exploring Momentum and Gravity
(Harnessing Forces for Dynamic Movement)
•Techniques for lifting, supporting, and being supported
•Utilising momentum to create fluid and continuous motion
•Experimenting with different speeds and qualities of movement
•Safety tips to support the practice with confidence and ease
•Partner exercises to deepen the connection and responsiveness
Week 3: Expanding the Movement Vocabulary
(Incorporating Creativity and Expression)
•Introducing spirals, turns, and intricate partnering skills
•Exploring the use of space and levels in contact improvisation
•Developing personal movement styles within the Contact Framework
•Improvisational games to enhance spontaneity and creativity
•Group discussions on the artistic and expressive potential of contact dance
Course Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will understand the fundamental principles of contact improvisation, enhance their ability to move confidently with a partner and develop a creative and expressive movement style. They will leave with a deeper appreciation for the art of contact dance and the connections it fosters.
