Learn to sew in this five-week beginners sewing class with a twist. Learn all the basics of sewing AND how to do it using a zero waste/upcycled ethos.
You will learn to:
- Confidently use a sewing machine
- Use the straight stitch and zigzag stitch
- Finish the seam
- Repurpose old garments and source great upcycled materials for your projects.
WEEK 1 – Getting to know your sewing machine + Getting to know each other
WEEK 2 – Making a bag + Discussing sewing supplies
- Using what you already have (ribbons, shoelaces, straps)
- What not to throw away? Recovering zips, buttons, fastenings etc. from garments destined to landfill.
- Shopping in the op-shops - what to buy, what to avoid.
WEEK 3 – Making a pencil case or a coin purse + Talking about fabric
- Types of fabric – woven vs. knit
- Buying new – spotlight vs. specialty shops
- Threads and needles
- Repurposing old garments
WEEK 4 – Making Japanese knot bag + Talking about sewing machines
- Taking care of your machine – cleaning and oiling
WEEK 5 – Design and make your own personal project
