This program is for students entering 3rd or 4th grade in the 2026-2027 school year. This program is a half day (9:00 - 12:00), three day program. The content in session 2 is identical to session 1 - this is a second offering of the same program.

Learn about sustainability and environmental engineering! This hands-on STEM summer program introduces students to sustainability and environmental engineering by solving engaging, real-world problems. Using LEGO Essential kits, students will create renewable-energy prototypes as they work through each step of the Engineering Design Process. Throughout the program, students will take on a series of mini challenges focused on environmental sustainability. By the end, they’ll leave confident in their ability to make a positive impact and contribute to a cleaner, safer planet.

PREREQUISITES

MSOE summer programs are unique in that the program is almost entirely spent in a classroom-style environment. Snack breaks (all programs) and lunch breaks (full day programs only) will include some free time, but otherwise, program time is spent working on STEM labs, activities, and projects. Most programs utilize technology which may involve sitting on a computer for extended durations doing coding or design work.

Students do not need to have prior STEM experience but will be most successful if they have an interest in learning more about the topic explored during their program. Students must be able to read at the lowest grade level listed for a program.

A fundamental learning outcome of nearly all STEM programs includes working in teams to solve problems. With few exceptions, we are unable to accommodate students who wish or need to work independently.

To help ensure we can continue to sustain summer programs, scholarships are now offered on a pay-what-you-can model. A recommended contribution per student is listed in the application, however, families may contribute any amount they are able. Payment is not due at this time – if selected for a scholarship, you will receive a link to finalize registration and payment.
