    Event description

Gentle melodic motifs nested in uptempo passages set to Balkan-influenced rhythms are East of West’s signature style.

On June 2, the band will launch their second album ‘Moving Home’ with a fresh set of original compositions by Bosnian-born double bass player Goran Gajić. Over the four years of their collaboration, the trio has developed an intuitive musical relationship, which emerges through their dynamic interplay, virtuosic unison melodies and expressive soloing, interspersed with moments of mesmerising musical sparseness.

    About the artists

The trio is composed of Philip Griffin, Malindi Morris and Goran Gajić.

On oud and Greek laouto, Griffin shows true mastery of his music craft, exploring poetic introspection through to artful virtuosity as he seamlessly interweaves traditional techniques with modern sensibilities.

Malindi Morris is a uniquely sensitive and creative instrumentalist on traditional hand drums and cymbals. She anchors the rhythm in the more dynamic sections, while providing atmospheric sound textures in the more mellow and sparse passages.

Goran Gajić’s composition and improvisation questions the usual support role of the bass, often mirroring oud passages and creating soulful melodic and harmonic interplay. His warm sound rounds out and creates a stable yet playful musical environment which simultaneously soothes and enlivens the listener.
