    Event description

Friends, join us for a special A Sound Life benefit concert with Ben Lee, supported by ASL Founder, Edo Kahn.

“Come from forever, and you will go everywhere.”

    ― Arthur Rimbaud

There is perhaps no better quote to illustrate the wild ride that has been singer/songwriter Ben Lee’s career, and also the intention behind it. Beginning his professional recorded output at merely 14 years old, discovered and championed by tastemakers Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys immediately, Ben always concerned himself with big questions, big feelings and a yearning to experiment with new forms, challenges and collaborations from an early age.

From his critically acclaimed indie solo albums like Grandpaw Would (featuring Liz Phair), Breathing Tornados (that spawned the hit single ‘Cigarettes Will Kill You’) and Awake Is The New Sleep (featuring Jenny Lewis and containing the worldwide indie smash “Catch My Disease”), to his work as composer on Lena Dunham’s HBO series “Camping” this year, fans of Ben Lee never know what is going to happen next.

There was his “Mixtape” album with originally written songs in different styles performed by artists like Ben Folds, Zooey Deschanel, the eels and Kylie Minogue. There was the psychedelic children’s musical about alcohol called “B is for Beer”, created with legendary author Tom Robbins (Jitterbug Perfume, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues) and currently being developed as an animated film. He also served as a bandleader for the Tom Hanks produced “3 Minute Talk Show”, musical director for Daniel Johnston’s farewell tour and KCRW performance, produced on Jill Sobule’s acclaimed solo album “Nostalgia Kills”. Ben also took a fun detour on his nearly instrumental album “Ayahuasca: Welcome to the Work”, and is planning to release an album of indie rock covers called “Quarter Century Classix” this year. Lastly, there is his collaboration with actor/director/writer Josh Radnor named “Radnor & Lee” that has garnered a massive South American following and have their 2nd album due early 2020.

A career like Ben Lee’s is not something that is easily understood, but is a perplexing joy to witness. In his own words “My love’s confusing, but it never gets dull!”
