Beneath the Surface
Description
You can see the behaviour. What you can’t see is what’s driving it.
The missed handovers. The safety conversations that don’t land. The meetings where everyone agrees and nothing changes.
Most organisations try to change behaviour from the surface, with new values on the wall, another training program and another engagement survey. It works for a while. Then pressure hits, and people go straight back to what they’ve always done.
That’s not a discipline problem. It’s a depth problem.
Beneath the Surface is a 90-minute executive breakfast for leaders who want to understand what’s really driving the culture in their business, and what it’s costing them.
What you’ll walk away with
A sharper lens on culture and performance. A practical way to explain to your board or executive team why culture is a performance lever, not an HR initiative.
Insight into your own values. A short, guided exercise on the values that drive you, the beliefs underneath them, and the behaviours they speed up or hold back. Most leaders have never looked at this.
A look inside the Barrett Culture Values Assessment. See what it reveals about your people: what they value, the culture they experience today, the culture they want, and how much energy is being lost to friction and fear.
A clear next step. No vague inspiration. You’ll leave knowing what a first, low-risk step into culture work looks like for your organisation.
Who it’s for
Senior leaders who carry responsibility for culture and the budget to act on it: CEOs, MDs, General Managers, People and Culture or HR leaders, and Operations leaders.
Built for leaders in mining, construction, engineering, oil and gas and industrial services.
Bring your counterpart. The best conversations happen when a People and Culture leader and an Operations leader from the same business sit at the same table.
What makes this different?
This isn’t a conference session. It’s 12 senior leaders in one room, with real conversation and a personal exercise you’ll use beyond the morning. We keep it small on purpose, so everyone gets airtime.
For leaders ready to go further, we’ll share a contained first step on the morning, and a bonus for the first three organisations that take it.

Testimonials
The insights, challenge and support Marty has provided have strengthened my leadership skills and, more importantly, helped me become a better person.
What impressed me most about Marty was his ability to gain trust and respect from senior managers and work crew on site from day one... Marty was committed to the success of the Project and the team.
I have learned to delegate and coach more effectively, to concentrate on jobs where I can add real value and still deliver a high-performance team and culture.
Martin added significant value to the standard of daily pre-start and general safety conversations that has a massive flow on to safety, environment and quality in a time, cost and schedule context.
This insight enabled me to... improve our relationship, and the person’s behaviour. This improvement was noticed not just by myself but by others in the team as well.
He is able to listen deeply and ask powerful questions, that enables individuals to think differently and gain new insights that leads to positive change and bottom line results.
FAQs
- Is this a sales pitch?
No. Most of the morning is practical content and a personal exercise you’ll get value from regardless. At the end, we’ll share how organisations take a first step with us. There’s no pressure to take it.
- Why is there a cost?
The $57 covers breakfast and holds your seat. With only 12 places, we want them to go to leaders who’ll be in the room.
- Can I bring a colleague?
Yes, and we’d encourage it. Each person needs their own ticket. Pairing People and Culture with Operations works especially well.
- Do I need to prepare anything?
Just one thing. About a week before, you’ll get a link to a short online values assessment. It takes about 10 minutes, and you’ll bring your top values with you on the morning. That’s the only preparation.
- Will what I share stay in the room?
Yes. We’ll agree to confidentiality at the start, and you choose what you share.
- What is the Barrett Culture Values Assessment?
An online survey that takes your people about 15 minutes. It shows what they value, the culture they experience now and the culture they want, and how much energy is being lost to dysfunction.
- What if I can’t make it?
Plans change. You can transfer your ticket to a colleague at any time, and we’d love you to send someone in your place. If no one can come, you’ll get a full refund up to 48 hours before the event.
