Event description

On 8 January 2025, Make Freedom Ring presents the Nasmé Ensemble for the first time in Berlin, in a concert fundraising for the crucial humanitarian relief efforts of Medico International in Gaza.

The newly formed Nasmé Ensemble is making one stop in Berlin on the 8th of January 2025 before their tour on the Canary Islands, and will be there to showcase a repertoire of European classical pieces from Mozart to Dvorak, in addition to a work on Palestinian songs and dances by Kareem Roustom.

Nasmé in Arabic means a breeze of air, and this soulful group will be bringing five incredible Palestinian musicians to provide their take on European classical pieces. The musicians hail from different parts of historic Palestine, a unity and harmony against all odds, and often impossible due to political limitations, yet they have managed to form this ensemble and fulfil a dream they have strived for to perform their favorite classical pieces in front of audiences across Europe.

"Make Freedom Ring" is organizing an international classical concert series that draws attention to the current humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and collects donations for various aid organizations.

Proceeds for this event will go towards Medico International in Gaza. These concerts has been produced by a loose collective of musicians and culture workers across London, Berlin, Lisbon, and Barcelona. You can find us on Instagram @makefreedomring2024 and at makefreedomring.co.uk.

Background

On March 8 in London and March 10 in Berlin, the group Make Freedom Ring organized parallel concerts to fundraise for institutions providing humanitarian aid in Gaza, as well as to generate conversation and support. Since then, several more concerts across Berlin, Manchester, Munich, and Lisbon have raised approximately 40.000€ for various charities and foundations, such as Medical Aid for Palestinian, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund and Medico International.

These concerts were organized as a response to the classical music industry’s relative silence regarding the ongoing human casualties and loss of life in Gaza, in the hopes of not only showing support for the people of Palestine and those that are suffering, but of starting a conversation within the sector about this world event. Make Freedom Ring has mobilized musicians and artists to draw attention to the plight of Palestinians through music with the help of media coverage and the public. Please spread the word.
